Giant Inflatables played a key role in fabricating and installing the Simulated Mars Landscape at Joseph Banks Secondary College. Designed for interactive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, the dome features atmospheric lighting, realistic terrain, and seamless airlock integration. This innovative installation provides students with a hands-on, immersive space exploration experience in a durable and safe environment.
Background

Joseph Banks Secondary College’s new space centre required an immersive Mars simulation dome as a central attraction for the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education program. The dome needed to create a visually and physically engaging Martian environment while ensuring durability and safety for long-term educational use.

Fabrication and Installation

Giant Inflatables (GI) was tasked with fabricating and installing the high-quality inflatable Mars landscape. Drawing on extensive experience in custom inflatables for educational and entertainment purposes, GI developed a structure that:

  • Created a Realistic Environment: The dome was designed with warm, ambient lighting to simulate the Martian atmosphere. The internal landscape features textured flooring and scattered rock elements to replicate Mars’ rugged terrain.
  • Seamlessly Integrated with the Space Centre: The inflatable was engineered to align perfectly with the rigid airlock, creating a smooth transition from the space centre’s mission control lab into the Mars simulation area.
  • Allowed for Interactive Experiences: The structure was designed to accommodate real-time educational activities, including simulated Mars missions, rover operations, and astronaut training exercises. The dome’s shape and dimensions provide an enclosed, immersive setting where students can fully engage with the experience.
Installation

The installation required precise placement to ensure the dome maintained its shape and structural integrity within the enclosed space. The GI team worked alongside project managers to:

  • Secure the inflatable for long-term stability.
  • Integrate controlled lighting to enhance the Martian ambiance.
  • Ensure seamless operation of airlock mechanisms for a realistic transition between Earth and Mars environments.
Results

Now a permanent feature at Joseph Banks Secondary College, the Mars Scape dome offers students an unparalleled hands-on learning experience. Its immersive design, interactive elements, and durable construction exemplify GI’s ability to translate industrial design expertise into engaging educational environments.
