Inflatable Gold AFL Ball for AFL Gather Round Adelaide

Background

The AFL initiated a high-profile activation to coincide with the Gather Round festival in Adelaide. This Major sporting event transforms the city into a hub for Australian Rules Football Enthusiasts, requiring significant visual markers to engage the public. The Marketing Team identified Rundle Mall, a historic and high-traffic pedestrian centre, as the primary location for a monumental installation. This project coincided with the 50th anniversary of Rundle Mall, necessitating a design that celebrated both the sporting culture and the golden milestone of the precinct.

The project leads required a solution that offered versatility for future tours while maintaining a premium aesthetic. The primary objective was to create a 10 m-tall Inflatable Gold AFL Ball that would dominate the skyline and serve as a central gathering point, where the Rundle Mall activation team would give away golden AFL Balls as part of a promotion.

The massive installation had to incorporate an interchangeable skin, allowing the AFL to swap the celebratory metallic gold skin for a traditional yellow version for subsequent events. The AFL entered into a consultative design and fabrication partnership with Giant Inflatables to translate these complex branding requirements into a functional reality.

Design and Fabrication

The Design Team focused on the technical challenge of utilising metallic materials in large-scale inflatable structures. Achieving a flawless, wrinkle-free finish on reflective textiles is notoriously difficult. To resolve this, the Fabrication team used an exclusive material called metallic leather. This texture provided the necessary flexibility for inflation while maintaining a crisp, high-sheen surface that mimics the look of solid metal. Every panel of the Inflatable Gold AFL Ball underwent precise digital patterning to ensure even inflation pressure, eliminating surface distortions typically associated with standard PVC inflatables.

The consultative design process included rigorous PMS colour matching to ensure the branding for the Rundle Mall 50th anniversary and the AFL remained consistent with the official style guides. The 10 m structure sits upon a weighted, branded blue base that houses the internal inflation systems. This base provides a stable foundation for the Inflatable Gold AFL Ball, enabling it to withstand the wind loads in an urban canyon environment such as Rundle Mall. This re-skinable technology provides the AFL with a multi-use asset that reduces long-term costs. The final Inflatable Gold AFL features high-resolution printing that remains crisp and legible even under full tension, showcasing the technical expertise inherent in the manufacturing process.

Result

The Inflatable Gold AFL Ball became a prominent fixture and a landmark in Rundle Mall for the duration of the Gather Round event. Standing 10 m tall, the structure dominated the siteline to tourists and fans walking by, drawing spectators from across the Central Business District. The metallic finish successfully captured the public’s attention, fulfilling the dual purpose of celebrating the mall’s anniversary and promoting the football festival. Post-event feedback indicates that the Inflatable Gold AFL Ball created a dynamic backdrop for social media, with thousands of fans sharing images of the installation online. The AFL now possesses a versatile, high-quality asset that is ready for deployment at future national events.
