Giant Inflatables engineered a custom floating inflatable structure on the Brisbane River to celebrate the Dolphins' historic NRL finals berth.
Background

Black Raven Media, a premier Australian experiential media agency, specialises in high-impact out-of-home brand activations. Budget Direct, an award-winning Australian insurance company and major partner of the Dolphins National Rugby League team, sought to create a historic marketing moment. To commemorate the club’s inaugural top-four finals qualification on September 10, 2026, the Project Leads devised a custom floating inflatable display on the Brisbane River.

The primary campaign objective was to create a dominant visual centrepiece on water that would capture public imagination and unite sports fans. The Marketing Team conceived a custom floating inflatable depicting the iconic dolphin fin emblem to travel along Brisbane’s waterways, creating dramatic photo opportunities alongside famous landmarks like the Story Bridge. The activation required a functional floating platform capable of carrying live television hosts, brand ambassadors, and mascot performers during live broadcast television appearances.

To translate this challenging creative concept into a safe marine installation, Black Raven Media selected Giant Inflatables as their engineering partner. Executing activations on tidal rivers involves severe environmental risks that standard promotional displays cannot withstand. Rigid barge alternatives presented severe transport, cost, and rigging constraints. Giant Inflatables provided the consultative design services, 3D CAD modelling, and specialised technical fabrication necessary to produce a high-performance custom floating inflatable that met strict marine safety guidelines and delivered maximum visual impact.

Design and fabrication

The Giant Inflatable Design Team initiated the technical development process by analysing hydrodynamic forces, buoyancy requirements, and wind resistance. Operating a custom floating inflatable with a vertical shape exceeding 5 m in height on open water creates severe wind drag and tipping moments. Wind gusts on the Brisbane River could easily capsize or distort unengineered floating structures. Furthermore, safety regulations required absolute platform stability while personnel walked and stood on the deck surface in open water.

To solve these engineering challenges, the Design Team engineered a dual-compartment custom floating inflatable architecture. The fabrication team engineered the assembly into two distinct functional components:

  • high-pressure inflatable floating deck constructed with advanced internal matrix technology to form a rigid walking platform
  • vertical giant dolphin fin inflatable manufactured from heavy-duty 0.9 mm commercial PVC tarpaulin engineered to retain structural shape under wind pressure

Aesthetics and brand exactness were vital for the custom floating inflatable branding. The fabrication team utilised precise PMS colour matching and full-surface high-resolution digital printing. The graphics incorporated Budget Direct’s signature red, gold, and white colour scheme, along with intricate ocean wave pattern motifs. Every seam was reinforced using high-frequency thermal welding to prevent pressure degradation during long hours of water exposure.

For installation and river navigation, this custom floating inflatable system integrated seamlessly with a motorised pontoon vessel managed by Splashdown Entertainment. The installation team integrated heavy-duty, marine-grade stainless steel towing bridles and anchor points around the pontoon’s perimeter. The fin and the deck of the inflatable were designed and fabricated to inflate independently, ensuring optimum rigidity while also allowing the fin to be deflated when the inflatable needed to be transported longer distances. This allowed the marine crew to efficiently tow the structure smoothly along river currents while maintaining directional control in winds up to 50 km/h.

Result

The custom floating inflatable activation achieved remarkable success across national media channels and social platforms. Floating down the Brisbane River against the backdrop of the city skyline and Story Bridge, the towering dolphin fin served as an unmissable rallying point for sports fans. The custom floating inflatable provided a stable platform, allowing television reporters and brand representatives to walk and stand safely on the water during live national broadcasts.

National television news networks, sports channels, and digital media platforms featured the custom floating inflatable prominently. Social media channels recorded viral engagement, generating millions of online impressions across Instagram, TikTok, and news sites. Giant Inflatables delivered a flawless custom floating inflatable solution on schedule, meeting all safety requirements, preserving brand integrity, and delivering a safe, durable, and highly impactful custom floating inflatable that elevated Budget Direct’s brand presence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stability comes from a multi-chamber design. The perimeter anchor points and towing bridles allow marine vessels to maintain orientation against river currents and wind forces.
The floating platform utilises independent air compartments to provide secondary buoyancy containment.
Custom floating inflatables deflate into compact, manageable bundles for easy land transportation via standard utility vehicles or trailers. Once at the launch site, high-volume air pumps inflate the platform and vertical components before launching onto the water.
