AFL Play operates as the central digital and operational hub dedicated to promoting Australian Rules Football participation across all demographics, age groups, and genders throughout Australia. To grow the sport beyond traditional match-day venues, event organisers sought to engage potential players within high-density public places. Promoting sports participation outside conventional stadium environments requires interactive touchpoints that immediately attract passing foot traffic.

The marketing team identified retail shopping centres as prime locations for experiential brand activations. However, indoor commercial venues present strict operational constraints, including limited spatial footprints, ceiling height restrictions, precise setup schedules, and rigorous safety standards.

To overcome these environmental challenges, event organisers required commercial-grade custom inflatable activations that could transform standard retail floor space into an engaging, multi-skill sports playground. Giant Inflatables was engaged to design and manufacture a suite of specialised inflatable target structures.

To ensure seamless execution, Giant Inflatables partnered with SEDA, a long-standing logistics and operational partner. SEDA manages the set installation, transport, and daily logistics for inflatable playgrounds throughout Greater Melbourne and nationwide, establishing a reliable operational framework for ongoing community outreach.

Design and fabrication

The Giant Inflatable design team initiated the consultative engineering process by evaluating the operational requirements of indoor retail environments. The primary structural unit developed for the activation suite is a compact, high-impact inflatable target cube.

Engineers focused on maximising visual authority while maintaining a compact footprint suited for shopping centre concourses. The design team integrated high-visibility green and black surface panels, precisely matched to official brand guidelines using custom Pantone colour matching protocols.

Result

The deployment of custom inflatable activations successfully established a high-impact presence for AFL Play inside major retail centres. By positioning interactive sports playgrounds directly within shopping malls, event organisers generated consistent foot traffic among families and young sports enthusiasts.

The durable construction handled continuous daily use during peak retail hours, while the streamlined deflated volume enabled SEDA technicians to execute fast, efficient bump-outs. The project fulfilled AFL Play’s core objective of expanding grassroots sports engagement outside traditional stadium walls through dynamic, highly accessible custom inflatable activations.
