In collaboration with Giant Inflatables, architect John Macdonald created Bright Buoy, a striking inflatable sculpture that fuses art and science to advocate for urgent climate solutions at the SWELL Sculpture Festival.
Background
John Macdonald is a Melbourne-based architect with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Melbourne. He has extensive experience in ecologically sustainable design and has contributed to the development of numerous award-winning green initiatives. He is widely published, holds multiple patents in the green sector and has presented his research at leading international conferences. Over the past decade, John has turned his focus toward carbon dioxide removal and climate cooling technologies.
Bright Buoy is a conceptual sculpture inspired by solar thermal sun-tracking devices that could help cool vulnerable coral reefs, such as parts of the Great Barrier Reef, through ocean whitening and marine cloud brightening technologies.
Giant Inflatables has built a strong reputation in the inflatable product sector for designing and fabricating artistic inflatables, and Mikael Abramowich is always happy to put his industrial design expertise to work. John contacted Giant Inflatables to recreate a non-functioning inflatable sculpture of the Bright Bouy for presentation at the 2025 Swell Sculpture Festival, aiming to raise awareness about urgent climate solutions and the need to stabilise rising global temperatures.
The Design and Fabrication
With its bold, spherical form and potential for dramatic night lighting, the Bright Buoy inflatable sculpture fuses art and science, offering both aesthetic impact and a platform for environmental advocacy. It is where sculpture meets climate action and creativity meets innovation.
The Bright Bouy Sculpture was presented at the 23rd SWELL Sculpture Festival, held along Currumbin, Gold Coast, Queensland.
