Circa Contemporary Circus worked with Giant Inflatables to create a custom 16-meter torus-shaped inflatable stage. This special structure gave acrobats a safe space to perform during the COVID-19 pandemic. Made from UV-resistant materials and clear PVC, the stage allowed for impressive visual shows at HOTA on the Gold Coast while meeting strict health guidelines.
Background

Circa is a well-known contemporary circus group from Brisbane, known for innovative physical theatre and top-level acrobatics. In early 2020, as COVID-19 began, they faced the tough task of putting on live shows while keeping their artists safe. For the HOTA Gold Coast event, they needed a special venue that allowed for dynamic movement and followed strict health and distancing rules.

Circa asked Giant Inflatables to design and build a special performance structure. Choosing a custom inflatable stage was a practical way to create a safe, controlled space outdoors. The clear barrier protected performers but still kept them connected to the audience. This stage helped Circa return to live shows even when physical contact was limited worldwide.

Design and Fabrication

The team designed a 16-metre torus structure with a central white pillar and a clear outer canopy. They used UV-resistant coated fabrics and strong transparent PVC nylon to make sure the stage would last and stay clear. These materials let stage lighting shine through, creating bright visual effects for evening performances.

Making installation easy was important for the HOTA outdoor venue. Because the inflatable stage was lightweight, the 16-metre structure could be moved easily and set up quickly on a raised platform. The team carefully managed the air pressure to keep the dome steady while acrobats performed energetic stunts inside.

Result

The custom 16-metre torus stage let Circa perform their acrobatic shows for live audiences on the Gold Coast. The inflatable stage worked as a protective bubble, meeting all 2020 COVID safety rules and standing out as a striking centerpiece. This creative solution helped keep the arts available during a challenging time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Large inflatable stages use powerful, quiet blowers to keep fresh air moving inside. This keeps performers comfortable during intense routines. The air pressure is set so the structure stays firm but does not make anyone inside uncomfortable.
Yes, every structure can be customised with PMS colour matching and high-resolution digital printing. This lets organisations add logos, event themes, or unique designs right onto the fabric. The materials are treated so the branding stays bright and UV-resistant.
These stages are very flexible and can be set up on grass, concrete, or raised wooden platforms. The key is to have a flat, clean surface and a way to secure the stage with weights or ground anchors.
