Custom Inflatable Wave Stage for Legs On The Wall Waverider Performance

Background

Legs On The Wall is a well-known Australian physical theatre company that creates large outdoor shows blending aerial acrobatics with storytelling. For their Waverider project, they needed a special set piece to serve as the main focus of their energetic performance. The event was designed to draw in public audiences and create an immersive setting inspired by the ocean’s power.

Legs On The Wall contacted Giant Inflatables to custom-design and fabricate a specialized custom inflatable wave. This custom inflatable wave serves as a lightweight and portable stage element that defines the performance space. By using a custom inflatable wave, the client achieved a grand visual scale that is easy to move between different tour locations. The custom inflatable wave allows performers to interact with a monumental structure that would be too heavy to build from traditional timber or steel.

Design and Fabrication

The design process started with a sketch from the artist director. Armed with a visual concept, the creative team designed the custom inflatable wave to look like a real curling wave while staying stable and safe. They used 3D modelling to ensure the wave met the visual needs of the Waverider show, closely matched the branding colours, and captured the vibrant, deep blues and white foam of ocean waves.

The custom inflatable wave is made from strong, UV-resistant fabrics and PVC-coated nylon, so it stands up well to outdoor use and sunlight.

Setting up the inflatable wave is easy with high-powered blowers, so less labour is needed for assembly. Internal supports keep the wave’s arched shape without heavy frames. The inflatable wave packs down into a small pallet footprint for transport.

Result

The custom inflatable wave created a striking, immersive backdrop that brought the Waverider performance to life. It met the goal of offering a portable, eye-catching space for the aerialists. This project showed that big stage sets can be lightweight, branded, and practical for touring.
