Eight-metre giant inflatable Soccer ball with re-brandable skin.

Background:

The South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) was established in 1993 to assist in securing economic and social benefits for the people of South Australia through tourism, events, and festivals. The SATC aims to grow the visitor and tourist economy to $12.8 billion by 2030.

Brief:

With the FIFA Women’s World Cup coming to Australia and New Zealand in 2023, SATC leveraged the event to bring tourists to the city for Adelaide-based matches.

To promote the tournament, SATC approached Giant Inflatables to help create two giant inflatable FIFA WWC soccer balls, one standing 8m tall and another 4m tall.

Creative Process:

The larger FIFA WWC soccer ball was 8m tall and had an 8x8m footprint. The Giant Inflatables installation team set the ball in Victoria Square in Adelaide’s CBD. Featuring a fully printed FIFA WWC livery, the setup of the unmissable icon represented the start of the tournament festivities in Adelaide.

The 4m variant of the ball, sporting an identical livery, was set up at Hindmarsh Stadium, where the first games of the women’s tournament would be played. Rather than promoting the FIFA event itself, this 4m variant brought spectators to the Tourism SA stall, where they could learn more about the fantastic destinations and activities that South Australia has to offer.

Design Process:

Both inflatable soccer balls were designed from the outset to be reusable for future events and become an asset for the SATC. Featuring a removable skin on both the balls and bases, they can be set up to promote any occasion by simply replacing the skins. With the spherical shape being so versatile, the soccer ball can be transformed into a golf ball, cricket ball, basketball or any other spherical object with relative ease.

Special attention was given to the ball’s construction to withstand a high wind rating of 55 km/h. With extra tie points and additional internal structure, the balls are designed to remain inflated over the month-long tournament without regularly needing to deflate for wind-related concerns.

Results:

The public at Victoria Square can see the 8m ball until mid-August when the tournament ends, and the 4m ball will remain a constant feature at all Hindmarsh Stadium FIFA events.
