Giant Inflatable Helmet attracts thousands to the MCG during World Cup.

The ICC T20 Cricket World Cup travels the globe to a different host country every two years, with the 2020 event being hosted in Melbourne.

As a high-profile international event, drawing thousands of local and international spectators, the grounds of the MCG were to be transformed into an exhibition full of activities and unique décor.

The main event runs for an entire week, with the park grounds of the MCG open to the public during that time. Both cricket fans and the general public are free to explore the event.

This is a perfect opportunity for partner brands to reach a broad audience and event plots are usually in high demand.

TLA Worldwide, the primary event producer, approached Giant Inflatables to create the centrepiece for the event grounds.

Their brief was to create a wholly original and unforgettable inflatable structure, draw crowds for photo opportunities, increase social media hype around the event, act as a talking point, stand out from a distance and look incredible on televised broadcasts.

The inflatable structure needed to be as large as possible within the given budget and be cricket-themed with the opportunity for use at future cricket events in Melbourne.

The Inflatable Helmet, which weighed over 600 kg, was set up for the main event week, with certification for almost all weather conditions.

A reflective chrome material was selected for the structure to create a distinctive aesthetic and draw the curious eyes of the general public to the event. As the chrome material itself is not structurally certified, a challenge arose in which we had to implement the chosen material without sacrificing the integrity of the product.

As a result, a highly technical internal bladder structure was created from heavy-duty materials, with the reflective material coating the outside for the desired result.

After many ideas and iterations, the final design was settled. A 10m high reflective chrome Inflatable Helmet was the centrepiece for the event.

The inflatable was tall and visible enough to stand out from the surrounding area and draw the general public to the event, increasing public attendance on the park grounds. The 10m helmet stood out right away for its ability to attract crowds and promote social media activity and news coverage surrounding the event.

After the success of the helmet at the Women’s T20 event, a subsequent contract was awarded to Giant Inflatables to make a sibling inflatable for the upcoming men’s event.*

*The event was ultimately cancelled due to the global onset COVID-19.
