Tourism Western Australia is the statutory body responsible for promoting tourism in Western Australia.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company began a push to increase tourism in the region with its “Wander Out Yonder” campaign.
In late 2021, Funkified, the marketing agency working on behalf of Tourism WA, approached Giant Inflatables as a return customer to help them create a family of inflatable Quokkas for the Wander Out Yonder campaign.
The Quokka is a marsupial only found in Western Australia and an icon of the region.
The inflatable Quokka Family would be displayed on the Bondi Beach foreshore, reaching an impressive audience at the bustling public foreshore.
The family of 6 quokkas made up of four 6m high quokkas and two 3m high quokkas were set up to create an unmissable advertisement spanning the Bondi Beach foreshore.
The quokkas were digitally printed with a highly detailed fur texture to add realism to the display.
The inflatables were set up in conjunction with billboards and branded signage spread across the foreshore, creating a clear message for Tourism Western Australia.
Created with high-quality PVC materials and featuring plenty of Giant Inflatables engineered tie points, the quokkas were engineered for the windy conditions of the seaside location.
During the design process, many iterations of the Quokkas were considered, trying different variations of sizes, shapes and textures until the concept was approved. Initially, the quokkas were designed to be 10m high. Still, after consideration of the weather conditions of the site, a 6m height was preferred as it resulted in a more straightforward setup.
Extra attention was given to the famous quokka smile and giant feet and tail, with the result representing the small marsupial.
Displayed over a weekend on the Bondi Foreshore, the quokkas successfully brought media attention to the campaign and were widely featured on television, in newspapers, and on social media.
The quokkas were a popular selfie opportunity, and the campaign gained significant hype.
After the successful event, the quokkas were shipped to western Australia for use at local events.
