Multiple Studio is a Melbourne-based studio that creates visual communication solutions that engage, inspire, and deliver exceptional outcomes for clients.
For this project, they worked with the Australian Space Agency, which was founded in 2018 and has its headquarters in Adelaide.
To coincide with the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Australian Space Agency was extending the opening hours of its Space Discovery Centre and looking for a way to attract attention and draw more patrons.
The idea, developed with Multiple Studios, was to create an extraordinary inflatable astronaut to stand along the busy North Terrace and be unmissable to passers-by.
The 10m Astronaut was created using lightweight reflective material, which gives it an unmissable appearance.
The lightweight material also makes the astronaut easy to set up, weighing only 51 kg.
The design for the astronaut included a detailed space suit and helmet, including 3D elements for the backpack, oxygen, and auxiliary tubing.
Partnered with branded crowd control fencing around the perimeter of the setup area, the astronaut would catch attention and focus it on the fencing’s clear messaging.
Working with multiple studios gives us an advantage when beginning the design process.
As visual communications experts, they came in with a strong idea for what they wanted, allowing us to focus on simply making it work in the physical world.
The Giant Inflatables design team began working on the 10m spaceman, focusing on practicalities like inflation points, tie points, and design details.
With little feedback on the initial concept, the design was finalized, and production began in a very short turnaround, resulting in the completion of the project in a matter of weeks.
The ten-meter astronaut was successfully installed at Lot 14 on February 17th, 2023, and will stay until the conclusion of the Adelaide Fringe Festival on March 20th.
The installation by Giant Inflatables went incredibly smoothly and was completed by lunchtime.
As soon as the astronaut stood up, the effect on the public was immediately noticeable, with pedestrians immediately stopping to investigate and take pictures.
Multiple Studios left the following positive feedback in the days after the installation.
Within moments of standing tall, the astronaut’s presence captivated the public. Pedestrians couldn’t resist stopping to admire the spectacle, snapping photos and marveling at the towering spacefarer. Positive feedback poured in, with Multiple Studios particularly impressed by the smooth execution.
“A big thanks from Multiple Studio. Giant Inflatables made the whole process much easier. Thanks for delivering an awesome product and experience for the client. Hope we can do it again one day.”
